Electrolytes & Why You Need Them

Published December 2024

Electrolytes are minerals in your blood and other bodily fluids that carry an electric charge. Think of them as the ‘Spark of Life’. There are five elements recognized as essential for maintaining a properly functioning electrical system within the body - Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride and Calcium. It’s interesting to think about electrolytes being made up of five elements with relation to ‘The Sacred Pentads’.

Within traditional yogic, ayurvedic, and tantric texts there are many examples of “5”s.

Five Acts of Creation, Five Movements of Prana (Pancha Vayus), Five Layers of Being (Koshas) and the Five Elements - Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. On their own they are Divine expressions, but it is when all are recognized in awareness simultaneously, that one can not exist without the others, is where the all encompassing magic happens.

Why are electrolytes essential?

  • Helps maintain healthy cellular hydration throughout the body. Did you know that you can drink all the water, but if your cells can not hold the water your aren’t receiving the full benefits of your efforts!

  • Aids in preservation of proper pH balance throughout the body

  • Supports healthy nerve conduction

How Do We Get Electrolytes?

While we can get these naturally occurring minerals in various whole foods, most of us need a supplement to get the adequate amount required. There are various powders and capsules that you can include in your daily routine, but I’ve grown fond of a liquid concentrate form by Eidon. 2 droppers is a daily serving size, with 30 servings in a bottle priced at $19.99, equalling around $0.67 per day. Way cheaper and so much healthier than Gatorade or other mainstream options.

“With only six naturally occurring minerals in de-ionized water, they are immediately absorbed and gentle on the stomach. This is because they are in ionic liquid form and your body does not have to spend energy on digesting the nutrient before cellular absorption.”
